The following is an El Terreno newsletter published on 29th May 2023

It's the end of the wet season, which means we are on the brink of several months with very little rain and frequent days without water. It's a serious problem which we're now trying to tackle with the help of a new group of interns and promises wellspring of opportunities.

Flowing & Renovating:2 Landmark Projects

Tides Turning on Water Scarcity in Atandahua
Community Water Project intern Chris (USA) took some important first steps to identifying the causes and consequences of the lack of clean, reliable drinking water in Atandahua and surrounding communities - but the work is far from over.
This month, we received 5 international interns to help build and even clearer picture of the problem. So far, we have been interviewing different stakeholders, analysing the water system and visiting communities that have succeeded protect and clean their water supply.

It's the first project with led with this level of complexity, but it already producing fruitful results. Watch out for next month's issue to see what they discovered, as they conclude their investigations and present them for future interns to build from.

Reaching New Heights on Gina's Cabin Transformation
After the initial injection of life into Gina's house from April's EcuaExplora group, Architecture and Sustainable Construction interns Alina (Germany) and Nathan (France) have been learning about adobe and working on the technical challenge of installing skylights into the new roof.

It's a thoughtful process to ensure the house stays watertight, but the end result will be a bright and comfortable living space for future visitors. As an architect student, Alina will also soon be beginning on the designs for another local renovation in the village, so watch this space!
If you want to make a difference through a hands-on project, while developing your professional skills alongside trained professionals, get in touch to arrange what an personalised internship might look like for you.

School Garden Blossoms

3 months into our school garden project we've been making great progress! After building the beds with the children's families, we have prepared them, made organic fertilisers and transplanted what will soon be nutritious organic food.
Engagement has been high from both students and parents, as we not only help produce organic food, but link it into the curriculum to help raise the level of education. We are hoping that next year we can expand to more schools to have an even greater impact.
These activities are made possible thanks to the generosity of people like you, many who make a small monthly contribution to benefit the low-income communities surrounding El Terreno.

The Last Enchanted Forest

Ecuador only has a handful of high-altitude native forests left. We travelled to Cashka Totras to hike through the mist and ancient trees, to connect with nature learn about how these fragile ecosystems are essential for the entire region.
We stayed with a local family and learned from community leaders about how they are protecting the forest to provide water security for future generations.
